Which Play Will Be Named Best Jewish Play of 2019?

3 New Plays to be showcased and audience votes for their favorite!

Over 150 playwrights from 27 states and 6 countries submitted plays to the Jewish Plays Project Contest this year.  More than 1,000 people across the country will contribute to choosing the ultimate winner. Regional contests are being held in Chicago, Houston, Charlotte,  Fairfax, Hartford, Silicon Valley and New York.   Volunteer readers from all walks of life, local audiences, and actors, will help select the BEST JEWISH PLAY of the year and shine a spotlight on all of the exciting semi-finalists and finalists.  The process of selection is unique, providing feedback to playwrights and giving their plays the exposure and publicity that can help them secure performance opportunities.

For the 6th year, Continuum Theater,  a not for profit Jewish theater and arts organization in Chicago,  teams up with contest founder, The Jewish Plays Project, to present the  contest in our region, The Midwest Jewish Play Writing Contest 2019.

Our Continuum Theater community selection committee has read 7 plays provided by the JPP and picked our top 3 favorites. Now it's your turn!

On April 7, at The Notes Street Theatre in Evanston, Continuum Theater has arranged for the community to see excerpts from three new plays, presented concert style, by professional actors.  The audience is engaged in a conversation about which play should be named Best Jewish play and votes for their favorite to continue on to the final round of the contest. Be the first to see these plays and meet the founder of The Jewish Plays Project, David Winitsky,  who will give an entertaining and informative presentation about the plays, playwrights and the contest.

The Midwest Jewish Play Writing Contest was generously underwritten by a gift from Continuum Theater supporter, Sonia Marschak.

Excerpts from these three plays will be performed:

Dox Modern Middle by Megan Pope, Los Gatos, CA
Rafaela, an orthodox girl, is sent to Israel to heal.  Overseas, she attempts to find common      ground between queerness and orthodoxy. How can you heal a wound you aren't sure you have?

The Shabbos Goy by Cary Gitter, Ann Arbor, MI
Angie Mastroantoni and Seth Konig. Lasagne and knishes. A romantic comedy.

In Every Generation by Ali Viterbi, San Diego, CA
Four Generations of the Levi-Katz Pesach Seder. Must trauma define us?  Will we ever be free?

More information about the playwrights and a short synopsis of the remaining  semi-finalist plays can be found here:
